SUPP Public Complaints Bureau (SPCB) was recently approached by members of a Christian Association which is the registered proprietor of a parcel of land situate adjacent to a quarry at 9th Mile Penrissen Road, Kuching. The members complained of a landslide on their association’s land.
When approached, SPCB fixed an appointment date for its Chief, Wilfred Yap to meet up and listen to their unhappiness and concerns and also to assess how best to help them. According to the complainants, a recent inspection by them on the association’s land have revealed a massive landslide into the quarry pit at the common boundary of the association’s land and the land now occupied by a company operating a quarry.
From investigation carried out by Wilfred Yap, it was discovered that there is a huge probability and possibility that the landslide could have been caused by blasting or explosive impact of the quarry operations on the land adjacent to the association’s land.
SPCB Chief, Wilfred Yap have now raised and highlighted the landslide matter to the Director of the Land & Survey Department which is responsible for approving and issuing the licence to quarry and remove stones under the provisions of Section 32 of the Sarawak Land Code. The landslide matter is also highlighted to the Sarawak Ministry of Resource Planning and Environment.
SPCB Chief, Wilfred Yap hopes that Land & Survey Department will conduct a proper investigation on the cause of the landslide and instruct the quarry operator to take remedial steps to rectify the matter as soon as possible in light of the key performance index (KPI) requirements imposed by the Sarawak Government to take immediate action on matters affecting the public within a reasonable time frame.
SUPP Public Complaints Bureau views the landslide matter seriously and will continue to monitor the matter with Land & Survey Department and Sarawak Ministry of Resource Planning and Environment.
