Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) launched a signature campaign to get Sarawakians to sign for a fair electoral system, initiated by SUPP Bawang Assan Branch Chairman Robert Lau.
Lau said Sarawakians wanted a fairer electoral systems, and hoped the Election Commission (EC) to re addressed the proposed of the new 11 State Seats.
He said the EC should take into consideration both the rural and urban distribution of seats fairly. He pointed out that the total number of voters in Sarawak is 1,109,134, which is an average seat with 13,526 voters per seat.
Lau who was speaking to reporters at the CWC today said under the new seat of N26 Gedong has the least number of voters with 6340, while the seat with the most voters in N54 Palawan with 31,888, which makes it a ratio of 1 to 5.
This, he added, caused an imbalance of the number of voters to the seat. He said in the past, it was planned so due to helping the rural property but it had been over 50 years ago and the rural areas had been developed.
He said with a fair distribution of voters, it would paint a clear picture of democracy.
Present during the press conference were SUPP President Senator Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian and SUPP Secretary General Dato’ Sebastian Ting.
